Entrance examinations for the MA in Linguistics are held twice a year:

  • Mid-September (application period: 1–31 July)
  • Mid-January (application period: 1–30 November)

Εxamination syllabus
Important Update: The examination syllabus was revised on 22 May 2024 and will apply to the September 2024 and subsequent entrance examinations.

Entrance examination date: Monday, 20 January 2025, at 11:30.

Start of studies: Monday, 10 February 2025.

Α Greek language qualification of at least B2 level is required, as almost all courses are offered in Greek. The BA (first degree) submitted must be recognised by the Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Center (Hellenic NARIC, or DOATAP). A translation of the degree and an Apostille stamp are also required.

The selection of candidates is made through written and oral examinations. Only candidates holding a BA with a general average score of 6.50/10 and above or an average of 7.00/10 in courses of the respective subject area of their proposed study are entitled to sit the exam.

Programme Overview

The MA in Linguistics offers a rigorous combination of teaching and research, emphasizing the connection between theoretical linguistics and practical applications.

The MA in Linguistics aims to:

  • Provide a robust foundation in theoretical linguistics, computational linguistics, and experimental studies.
  • Foster scientific knowledge, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Equip students with competencies valued in the contemporary job market and doctoral studies.

Students have opportunities to participate in departmental research projects and present their work at internationally recognized conferences and journals in linguistics and cognitive studies.

  • The MA in Linguistics is tuition-free and open to graduates of Greek universities or technical universities (former T.E.I.), as well as equivalent institutions abroad.
  • Duration of studies:
    • Full-time: 4 semesters
  • Part-time: 8 semesters
  • Teaching format: The teaching of the MA courses may be conducted in person for a minimum of 75% of the programme or via modern distance learning methods for a maximum of 25%.
  • Credits required: 120 ECTS

Awards and Scholarships

  • Award for Excellence:
    The top-ranked candidate in the entrance examinations (minimum grade: 8.5/10) will receive the "Efthymios Koumentakis" Excellence Award, including a cash prize of €1,000.
  • Scholarship Opportunities:

Students may apply for University of Crete scholarships based on academic performance during their studies.

APPLICATIONS FOR FREE ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS

Upon enrollment in the MA programme, postgraduate students are entitled to apply to the University of Crete for free accommodation and meals, provided they meet the relevant income and other criteria. For details, visit the Student Welfare Office website.
