Required Exam Material for Modern Greek Philology
Α Greek language qualification of at least B2 level is required, as almost all courses are offered in Greek. The BA (first degree) submitted must be recognised by the Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Center (Hellenic NARIC, or DOATAP). A translation of the degree and an Apostille stamp are also required.
The selection of candidates is made through written and oral examinations. Only candidates holding a BA with a general average score of 6.50/10 and above or an average of 7.00/10 in courses of the respective subject area of their proposed study are entitled to sit the exam.

The program awards a Master of Arts in one of the following areas:
Byzantine Philology
with a focus on fields such as: history of Byzantine literature, Byzantine paleography, codicology, history of biblical culture, epigraphy and textual editing.
Modern Greek Philology
with a focus on the history of Modern Greek literature, literary theory, comparative literature, textual analysis, and digital philology.
The program is addressed to university graduates from Greek or foreign higher education institutions who wish to deepen and specialize in the cognitive subjects of Byzantine or Modern Greek philology, in order to be able to staff Research Centers in Greece and abroad, to be employed in Byzantine or Modern Greek philology in the public and private sector (Libraries and Archives, Media, Publications and Organizations, Local Authorities) or to pursue doctoral studies.
The program is tuition-free.
It is delivered in a face-to-face format, ensuring personalized guidance from a network of professors specializing in various fields of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology. Students benefit from a dynamic academic environment featuring lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences throughout the academic year, with distinguished guest speakers from Greece and abroad. The program also offers a well-organized and up-to-date library, a postgraduate student office, and other support services.
The duration of the program is four semesters for full-time study and eight semesters for part-time study. Students obtain the Diploma of Postgraduate Studies upon successful completion of a total of 120 ECTS credits.
POSSIBILITY TO ENGAGE IN RESEARCH AND RECEIVE SUPPORT FOR SCHOLARLY PUBLICATIONS
The Program actively encourages and supports student participation in research projects leading to scholarly publications, as well as contributions to the new series of Modern Greek literature titled “ΑΝΑΨΗΛΑΦΗΣΕΙΣ” published by Sokolis (under the supervision of Angela Kastrinaki). Additionally, students are encouraged to publish their work in the peer-reviewed journal of the Faculty of Philosophy, Ariadne.
ADMISSIONS
Admission to the Program is by examination.
The admission exams take place in January and September. Applicants who wish to start their studies in February 2025 will be examined on January 20, 2025, at 11:30 AM.
The top-ranked candidate in the entrance examinations will receive the Efthymios Koumentakis Excellence Award, which includes a cash prize of €1,000.

Postgraduate students are eligible for competitive scholarships offered by the University of Crete (based on academic performance), as well as awards such as the “Menelaos Parlamas”, “Dimitrios Vikelas”, and “Stanley Moss” awards. They may also participate actively in Erasmus+ and Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility programs.
