Division of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology
The Division of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology (ΒΝΕΦ) undertakes the instruction of students, both at the degree and postgraduate level, in the field of Byzantine and Modern Greek philology, with high-quality educational and research output. Specifically, it serves the following subjects of study:
- History of Byzantine philology and the medieval Greek language
- Greek palaeography και epigraphy
- Medieval Greek poetry and prose
- Early Modern Greek philology
- History of Modern Greek literature
- History of ideas in Modern Greek and European literature
- Creative writing
- Literary theory
- Comparative literature
The ΒΝΕΦ Division has a long tradition in instruction in the above subjects, with the contribution of iconic teachers who served it in the past, such as Nikolaos Panagiotakis and Stylianos Alexiou. Today, the Division presents important research and didactic work with its active participation in the European Erasmus and Erasmus+ programmes, as well as the organization on a regular basis of lectures, seminars and conferences. Under its supervision and control there function two research laboratories: the Laboratory of Paleography and Microfilm Archive, and the Laboratory for Literary Genres and the History of Literature. Its didactic work is deployed equally both at the degree and postgraduate levels of study.
