Rethymnon International Conferences on the Ancient Novel (RICAN)

RICAN stands for Rethymnon International Conferences on the Ancient Novel. It is a biennial conference series devoted to the study of the ancient novel. The conferences are held at the Department of Philology in Rethymnon and are funded by the University of Crete.

RICAN 1 on Space in the Ancient Novel took place on May 14-15, 2001 and its proceedings have been published as AN supplementum 1.

The topic of RICAN 2 was Metaphor in the Novel and the Novel as Metaphor, was held on May 19-20, 2003 and its proceedings have appeared as AN supplementum 4.

RICAN 3 was held on May 22-24, 2005 and its topic was The Greek and the Roman Novel: Parallel Readings.

RICAN 4 was held on May 21-22, 2007 and its topic was Readers and Writers in the Ancient Novel.

RICAN 5 was held on May 25-26, 2009 and its topic was The Construction of the Real and the Ideal in the Ancient Novel

RICAN 6 was held on May 30-31, 2011 and its topic was Holy Μen/Women and Charlatans in the Ancient Novel

RICAN 7 was held on May 27-28, 2013 and its topic was Slaves and Masters in the Ancient Novel

RICAN 8 was held on October 14-15, 2016 and its topic was Material Culture and the Ancient Novel
